Coats Pharmacy opened in January of 1980 at the corner of E. Washington and McKinley St. in a single wide trailer that has been gutted and renovated. After a year of working to build his business, original owner Donald Judd Smith purchased a lot beside the Carlie C’s IGA and built the existing drugstore building. After 2 renovations, th pharmacy continues to strive for innovations and excellence in pharmacy.

Diana Smith Lischin began to work at Coats Pharmacy part-time summers and during holidays in 1980. After graduating from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1986, she moved to the northeast but returned home to work full-time in 1988. She has run the business so lovingly nurtured by her father since his death in 2001. She has kept the tradition of caring for her patrons alive and strong.

Diana is proud of owning and operating an independently owned pharmacy. She makes herself available after hours if needed and enjoys the privilege of having long time customers and employees. The dedication of the staff to each other and the success of the store have made the staff a tight knit family.

Just as Donald afforded his daughter the chance to learn the pharmaceutical business firsthand, Diana is doing the same with her family. Daughters Elyssa and Mahlon and husband Brian all work in the store in various capacities.
